Lithuania looks to new reactor in 2007

Following the permanent shutdown of the first of its two 1,500MW RBMK reactors at the Ignalina nuclear power plant at the end of last year, Lithuania is turning its attention to building a new reactor. At a seminar sponsored by the French government on energy options for Lithuania, held in Vilnius on January 14, economy ministry officials announced that a decision on a new reactor would be made in 2007, when Lithuania is due to adopt a new energy strategy. By law, the strategy must be renewed every four years. According to current projections, Lithuania will need new capacity between 2011 and 2020. The second reactor at Ignalina is scheduled to be closed in 2009.
