Ukraine's National Energy Regulation Commission, NERC, has approved a 16.5% increase in the price that EnergoAtom, the state-owned nuclear power producer, can charge for its output, the company said February 28. The tariff increase will take effect from March 1. NERC increased EnergoAtom's tariff to Hryvnia 105.1/MWh ($20.8/MWh), up from Hryvnia 90.2/MWh ($17.86) in February, the company reported. The NERC also allowed EnergoAtom to increase its tariff by 4.6% with effect from April to Hryvnia 110/MWh ($21.78). The new power tariffs would allow the company to raise funds to cover the rising price of nuclear fuel imported from Russia, but also to improve safety at the country's nuclear power plants, the company said. In 2008, EnergoAtom expects to spend Hryvnia 3.3 billion ($653.4 million) on the procurement of nuclear fuel and another Hryvnia 685 million ($135.6 million) for the removal, transfer and disposal of used fuel in Russia.rnEnergoAtom, which operates four nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 13,835 MW, produces about half of the country's total electricityrngeneration.
