RES TRACKER: April wind, solar output hits record 35 TWh

Wind output across the five markets recorded its first year-on-yeargain since October, rising 8% from April 2020, to 22 TWh. Solargeneration fell 8% on the year to 13 TWh, despite a 36% rise in Spain.German wind output fell by over 14 TWh for the first four months of2021 versus the year-ago period – the single biggest factor. This wasfollowed by UK wind output falling 4.2 TWh for the first four monthsof 2021 compared with the year-ago period. Spanish wind output inthe first four months of 2021 was 3 TWh higher, underlining the shiftin weather patterns this winter with wind speeds across NorthernEurope below average. Combined wind and solar output of 142 TWhacross the five markets for the first four months of 2021, was stilldown 21 TWh on the year. Across Europe, wind and solar generationpeaked May 4 at 156 GW, amid a surge in wind from the North Seaand strong solar further south, WindEurope data showed. As aresult, German midday prices turned negative for five hours on May4, with German wind and solar peaks just below the March 12 recordof 63 GW.
