Utah Launches Effort To Map Renewable Energy Zones, Develop Transmission

Utah is the latest state that is mapping out renewable energy zones as part of a broader effort to spur transmission and renewable development. A 20-member task force has begun the process of identifying renewable zones to support a law passed earlier this year that sets a goal for utilities to have 20% of their retail sales come from renewable sources by 2025. The task force includes utility officials, environmentalists and renewable developers as well as state and federal officials. Besides identifying renewable areas, the task force will try to determine how much renewable energy could be cost-effectively delivered to market, and what policies are needed to facilitate more renewable energy production and transmission. Transmission and economic issues will be addressed in a second phase of the project.
