A new light rail system opened in Phoenix just after Christmas, welcoming 350,000 riders in its first five days of service. The $1.4 billion, 20-mile Valley Metro light rail line makes 28 stops in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. A new website makes it easy to learn about development opportunities along the route. The site, LightRailConnect.com, was started late last year by real estate brokers Don Mortensen and Bryan Watkins to connect property owners with potential developers. Since then it has expanded, allowing employers near the light rail line to post job ads and review resumes and helping apartment seekers find housing with easy transit access. The site also links to Valley Metro, as well as the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa-all of which have adopted TOD zoning ordinances in recent years.
