Caterpillar found a better approach to serving the international pipeline community when establishing a dedicated pipeline equipment dealership - Pipeline Machinery International (PLM) in 2005. This independent, Houston-based and internationally located company has been providing Caterpillar purpose-built pipelayers around the world from the newest, Tier 3 heavy-lift models - 587T (200,000 lb) and the 583T (140,000 lb) to the lighter lifting PL61 (40,000 lb) The PLM used pipelayer fleet has various older model pipelayers - complete with the hydraulic conversion package from Vanguard. In addition to pipelayers, PLM provides other necessary equipment for the right-of-way, such as custom-configured Caterpillar tractors equipped with winch and angle blades as preferred by pipeliners.
