While various automatic meter reading technologies have been available in both the gas and electric industries for more than 40 years, electric utilities have been the recent drivers of rapid growth and new developments. Immediate demand for electric energy drives a strong appetite for frequent measurement intervals to help them manage that demand. In the gas industry, as technology offerings evolve and utilities look for ways to 1) deliver better customer service, 2) improve operational efficiencies and 3) more accurately measure resources, it is spurring interest in advanced metering systems.
