Push for High Plastic Pipe Quality in South Africa

Despite increasing concerns about presence of low quality HDPE and PVC pipes in Southern Africa market, the pipeline industry in the region is working toward scaling up the level of compliance with international standards of quality that would ensure integrity not only of the pipeline materials supplied but also the sustainability of any given pipeline transportation projects. The Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers Association (SAPPMA), a voluntary, self-regulating association that represents plastic pipe manufacturers in South Africa as well as other stakeholders in the industry, is pushing for adoption of internationally recognized practices such as timely preparation and availing of pipes manufacturing certification reports, scheduled plant inspections, and third-party validation and testing as efforts intensify to reduce substandard plastic pipes from the market.
