Inspired by natural cells, scientists have been investigating closed systems in terms of transportation, catalysis and protection for decades. The process of compartmentalization has led to the development of liposomes as the first artificial capsules. In recent years a different type of vesicular architecture, composed of macromol-ecules instead of small organic compounds, has become a hot topic of investigation, since they exhibit more stable and robust membranes.
