Luminescence associated with Eu3+ in two host lattices

The photoluminescence (PL) and low-temperature thermoluminescence (LTTL) of the Eu3+ ion in Sr3Al2O6 and Sr2CeO4 phosphors, singly doped and co-doped with other trivalent rare-earth ions, are described. The phosphors were synthesised by the sol-gel technique and X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that both were of single phase. PL emission peaks for Sr3Al2O6:Eu3+, RE3+ (RE3+ = Sm, Er and Tb) were observed around 580-620 nm whereas the emission of Sr2CeO4:Eu3+ shows peaks around 466, 490, 512, 537, 556, 585, 616 and 654 nm. The LTTL glow curves of X-ray irradiated Sr3Al2O6: Eu3+, RE3+ and Sr2CeO4:Eu3+ phosphors were measured at temperatures ranging from 80 to 200 K.
