If 2G represented A major gamble for operators a decade or more ago, the stakes associated with 3G networks now are certainly much higher, with only some of the lessons learned during that experience applicable to the challenges facing operators today. The 3G world is characterized by significant leaps in complexity at a number of different technological levels, from the handset and radio-access domain at the network edge to application servers at the core. Additionally, operators focus on delivering premium services, such as multimedia content, and integrating traditional enterprise applications with the mobility domain in their quest for profits. These service areas add their own element of complexity to the overall picture - along with an accompanying exposure to risk.
