Vodafone UK, BT sign backhaul deal

Vodafone UK has announced an agreement with BT, whereby BT Wholesale will provide and manage backhaul between Vodafone's UK base stations and BT's core national network. Under the agreement, BT will deploy its 21CN-enabled Ethernet service, which provides scalable bandwidth and offers backhaul speeds up to 60Mbps. The process includes the introduction of carrier Ethernet and MPLS pseudowire technologies into Vodafone's backhaul networks and the migration of the operator's microwave network to native Ethernet. Vodafone estimates that backhaul will account for 32% of its total network capex in 2007 and 2008.
