An introduction to audio description: a practical guide

Audio description (AD) is a fascinating and relatively new mode of audiovisual language transfer intended for the blind and visually impaired. It is practised in an ever-increasing number of countries, with the United Kingdom being one of the world leaders in the field. It is therefore of no surprise that a British audio describer, Louise Fryer, has written a book on AD that offers a thorough overview of describing the audiovisual. The book is organised in 13 chapters. At the end of each chapter there is a rich list of references, suggested reading, and, particularly interesting and useful, exercises and points for discussion. This book can therefore be used as a textbook, but also as food for thought, an excellent starting point for an (audiovisual translation) AVT researcher or practising audio describer. Filmmakers interested in how to make their films more accessible to visually impaired viewers could also find this book engaging and apposite.
