To anyone involved with permanent way in this country the Quail Railway Track Diagrams have long been a trusted reference source. They may at first sight not be the easiest documents to fathom but they are renowned for amount of information that they present. Now the publishers of these diagrams have produced a remarkable new volume. This, their TRACKatlas of Mainland Britain, is an important addition to railway primary source material.rnA single hardback volume, the TRACKatlas comprises 104 sectional maps at a notional scale of 1:210,000 depicting the national network together with a further 28 larger scale maps of complex areas. In principle, as the introduction to the book says, "the maps show the passenger and freight routes which represent the national rail network together with their track formations including connections, crossovers and infrastructure".
