Inverters for small ac motors in appliances and low performance industrial applications must meet stringent efficiency, reliability, size, and cost constraints. Presently, most of these small inverters utilize discrete IGBTs and freewheel diodes in TO-220 or TO-247 packages along with HVICs (high voltage ICs) in their power stage. One common problem with this approach is the high manufacturing cost associated with mounting and isolating multiple high voltage discrete cornpo-nents. Another equally perplexing problem is maintaining consistent performance and reliability when the characteristics of the HVIC drivers and IGBTs are not matched.
