The owner's challenge to the architect was to design a bank building with the following requirements: 1. A stand-alone facility in the city of Mankato, Minnesota. The former bank facility was situated obscurely in a small mall. 2. A one-story building with about 10,000 sq ft (930 m~2) of floor area. 3. An interior design that could incorporate the bank's image and execute modern functions. 4. An affordable, yet innovative design. 5. A fast turnaround. 6. A secure building but with minimal future maintenance. 7. A completion date before the end of the year 2002.
