Recollection of Maria Petrou at University of Reading

摘要

Maria Petrou joined the NERC Unit for Thematic Information Systems (NUTIS) in the Department of Geography in Reading University on a one-year research fellowship in 1986. She was funded under a British Alvey IT project to develop a system for the knowledge-based segmentation and classification of remotely-sensed images of terrain, in which knowledge contained within a digital map was exploited. Maria wanted to use this short contract to learn about environmental image processing in an effort to move away from the research in astronomy that she had been working on in Oxford. At the time research jobs in astronomy were proving hard to come by, whereas the Government was putting money into IT research because of its likely impact upon the IT industry.
