Stora Enso, the group formed through the merger of Enso and Stora, has decided on a new focus for its research and development work. More effective use is to be made of employee skills and the group's vast manufacturing resources in developing product quality. The new strategy is explained by Yngve Stade (Senior Executive Vice President, Corporate Support) and Ilkka Kartovaara (Senior Vice President, Corporate R&D) in the article on pages 15—17. Instead of being utilized at group level, Stora Enso's joint R&D resources are now being directed more towards serving the needs of the core businesses. The divisions have been given clear responsibility for identifying their own particular product development needs. This will allow the necessary resources to be procured as most appropriate for each particular situation both from within the group and from outside.
