CEPI aims to tip the balance back toward business

European Paper Week 2004 proved to be the biggest yet, with all manner of pulp and paper organizations coming together in a three-day frenzy of meetings, seminars, committees, workshops and assemblies. And as always, there were the usual lunches, cocktails and dinners where attendees could have more informal discussions about any number of the issues raised over the course of the various events. In fact, well over 400 figures associated with the industry congregated in Brussels for the annual get-together, which saw 10 separate paper organizations hold meetings under the umbrella of European Paper Week (see Box 1). While many of the events were only open to 'members' of the respective bodies, there were far more 'open' sessions during Paper Week than in previous years. For example, ACE (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) held a seminar that focused on environmental management systems, while CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) as the main sponsor of Paper Week held a series of open seminars on subjects as diverse as the responsible sourcing of raw materials and emissions trading.
