摘要

The objective of this study was to expand the knowledge of the mechanism governing fibrillation of mechanical pulp under com-pressive and shear forces, and to examine its effect on pulp and paper properties. The compressive forces generated in a Lampen mill promoted neither internal nor external fibrillation of mechanical pulp fibers. However, the shear forces generated in an ultra-fine friction grinder fibrillated fibers mainly externally, resulting in increased density, bond strength and light scattering of the sheet. Shear forces seem to be more important than compressive forces in improving the strength of mechanical pulp.
