Report on Worldpak 2002, 'Improving the Quality of Life through Packaging Innovation': 13th IAPRI World Conference on Packaging, 23-28 June 2002, School of Packaging, Michigan State University

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary in June 2002, the School of Packaging at Michigan State University (MSU) organized and hosted 'Worldpak 2002' in conjunction with the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes. Over 5 consecutive days over 140 papers and more then 40 posters were presented to an audience comprising around 500 delegates from all around the world: these presentations covered a wide range of packaging science, technology and management topics, prepared by a balanced mixture of research and industry representatives from more then 20 countries. In addition to an excellent scientific and technical program, the conference featured a number of alumni activities highlighting the impressive achievements of MSU's School of Packaging over the last five decades. In those 50 years over 7000 students graduated, which is to be considered an enormous achievement in an environment where the packaging profession is still suffering from lack of recognition and is not seen by young people as a unique opportunity to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life.
