SAB Millers new Quartz bottles

It has been one of SA's biggest packaging industry challenges. Project Calabash was born when SAB announced mid 2006 that it was planning to replace its entire existing returnable float of 750ml beer bottles - the famous 50-year-old quart - with a new, more up-to-date model - still 750ml, still amber in colour, and still with the pry-off crown closure, but modern in design and appeal. The estimated 200 000 tonnes of old glass quart bottles in circulation, once returned, would be crushed and recycled. About 30% by weight of each new bottle will be recycled old bottles. The new shape returnable bottle began to be introduced across SABs main brands last quarter 2007 in the coastal areas, and is now being introduced inland. The new shape complements state-of-art label technology, and includes a wraparound neck label. Importantly, the new bottle is more durable than the present one, which has a positive environmental impact.
