All-optical switching for high bandwidth optical networks

In communication systems, transmission, switching and network protocols are advancing rapidly. Initially, optics was used mainly in point-to-point fiber transmission. With the increasing demand for bandwidth, optics is reaching further into the communications elements. High bit rate optical switching will be required for ul-trahigh bandwidth optical communications systems. Future technology will provide optically controlled all-optical switches. This article investigates some of those possibilities.
