OR of the people, by the people, for the people

Fellow operational researchers-three score and thirteen years ago the term "Operational Research" was coined, and the first OR team was installed within the Royal Air Force in 1938 (according to [1, p. 8]). After World War II, the successes of OR became publicly known, and OR infiltrated into industry. Many new OR tools were invented, particularly in the 1950s, and the expectations in the power of OR grew. The innovations included continuous and discrete optimization, network analysis, forecasting, search techniques, queues and stochastic processes as well as simulation languages. OR became a profession with new education programs, new textbooks and monographs, professional societies, professional journals, and international conferences.
