Present and Future of Olive Farming in Morocco

The olive is the principal fruit crop cultivated in Morocco where it has spread across almost the whole of the country owing to the ease with which it develops and bears fruit in a variety of growing conditions and the way in which it adapts to even the most critical of soil and climatic conditions. Studies on the history of olive farming in Morocco reveal that it dates back to ancient times, a finding borne out by the remains of mills (maasras) and other oil extraction implements discovered on various Roman and Phoenician sites (Volubilis, near Meknes, and Lixus near Larache).
