Shipping markets are a circular affair. A lack of tonnage pushes up earnings, the positive returns lead to optimism and owners order new ships. As the newly built vessels take to the water, there becomes too much tonnage and earnings are squeezed. This continues until enough vessels are scrapped for the fleet size to drop again, at which point earnings pick up and start the rollercoaster ride all over again.
