Fishing has a long history in human societies, with the first evidence of fishing recorded some 500,000 years bp (before present), and increasing evidence of fish-based diets and fishing developing 40,000-10,000 years bp. Advances in technology, including the use of nets and lines, were recorded in Egypt from ~ 3,500 years bp and the use of vessels to transport dried fish dates from the Roman empire (~30 BCE-470 CE) and later during the Viking period (since ~800 CE). The first evidence of purpose-built fishing vessels dates from about 150-200 CE. Fish have been and remain among the most traded commodities globally and fishing vessels and fleets have a long history of technological advancement.
