The Nuclear Regulatory Commission plans a public meeting in Las Vegas Jan. 23 to discuss updating security requirements at the Yucca Mountain high-level radioactive waste repository in Nevada.rnThe meeting comes as NRC prepares this summer to receive an application from the Energy Department to begin building the repository, which is now two decades behind schedule and is slated to open in 2017 at the earliest.rnThe agency plans to publish a proposed rule in the Federal Register that would create new security, material control and accounting requirements for Yucca, with an eye toward ensuring that the dump is adequately protected, particularly from terrorist threats.
