Belarus plans to send nuclear waste from a planned atomic power plant to Russia for recycling in Russia, according news reports. Alexander Mikhalevich, deputy academic secretary of the National Academy of Sciences in Belarus, was quoted as saying it made no economic sense to establish nuclear waste treatment facilities in Belarus. Mikhalevich said that Russia has existing nuclear waste recycling technologies, so that nuclear waste from the future nuclear plant will be sent to Russia. The planned nuclear power plant near Ostrovets is due to start operations in 2018.
