The expected demise of a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is causing the Department of Energy to begin looking at potentially suitable granite deposits in other areas of the country - but no candidate sites have been nominated. A study looking at other potential locations has been carried out by the Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico. The laboratory developed as part of the United States' nuclear weapons program, but works on a variety of projects for the federal government.
