Beshear Announces Process For Installing Permanent Cap at Maxey Flat Disposal Site

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear (D) announced a three-year process of installing a permanent cap at the Maxey Flat nuclear waste disposal site in Fleming County will begin next year. Beshear became the first governor to visit the 900-acre site near Hillsboro since the state took ownership of it in 1978. The state plans to spend approximately $35 million planting vegetation, managing surface water and installing markers that identify the location of buried waste. Radioactive waste sometimes has leaked from Maxey Flat into the environment, most recently in the late 1990s.
