Belen, NM Council Opposes Nuclear Waste Transport

Three of four Belen city councilors voted to approve a resolution opposing the transportation of high-level radioactive waste via the railroad through the Hub City. Holtec International, a New Jersey-based nuclear equipment company, is applying for a license from the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a $2.4 billion consolidated interim storage facility in Lea County between Hobbs and Carlsbad. Another company, Waste Control Specialists, want to bring another such facility in Andrews County, Texas, which is near to Eunice, N.M.
