Mike Baron: The INVADER comes to Exelon Nuclear

Mike Baron is reactor services manager for Exelon Nuclear. One of his jobs for the past six years has been to find better ways to perform reactor maintenance during refueling outages. His responsibilities include leading a program that develops robots to help Exelon cut down on job time and, as a result, radiation dose to workers. Baron works on robotics with a core group of five people at Exelon, and often in conjunction with vendor companies R.O.V. Technologies, Inc. and General Electric Nuclear Energy (GENE). Baron's group, with R.O.V. and GENE, developed a robot called the INVADER that is used for inspecting boiling water reactors. The robot was credited with saving 48 hours of critical path time during an outage earlier this year at Exelon's Quad Cities nuclear plant, in Cordova, Ill.
