OPG prepared for next Pickering restart project

The decision of Ontario Energy Minister Dwight Duncan to approve the restart of Pickering A Unit 1 (NN, Aug. 2004, p. 115) was very much dependent on his confidence that the new chairman of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Jake Epp, and his management team, will be able to keep the project on course. Before being named chairman last December, Epp, a former federal cabinet minister, headed the Pickering A Review Panel, which reviewed the cost, schedule, reporting, and management of Unit 4's return to service. Its report, issued in December 2003, not only found mismanagement on the part of OPG, but also identified a lack of oversight by the previous government. Upon taking on the chairman's job, Epp also became a member of the OPG Review Committee, whose report recommended that the refurbishment of Pickering A Unit 1 should go ahead, as long as a number of important preparatory measures were completed before the start of major construction.
