摘要

U.S. nuclear power plants met the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's April 29 deadline for submitting revised security plans, according to the industry's advocacy group, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). The security plans outline steps the industry has taken or is taking to meet the NRC's new requirements that were issued in April 2003. Companies that operate the plants have until October 29 to complete implementation of the changes, many of which already have been made, NEI confirmed. The security upgrades are part of an additional $1 billion worth of expenditures in capital improvements and manpower that the energy industry will have spent by the end of this year in the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. About $500 million already has been spent, with another equal amount to be targeted toward secu-rity enhancements by October 29.
