摘要

Louisiana energy services (LES) on April 20 recommended that the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) be allowed to have a role in the company's license application proceedings for the proposed uranium enrichment facility in Eunice, N.M. That same recommendation was not extended to activists who want to kill the project simply because it is "nuclear," according to LES. NMED on March 23 had filed a petition with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission asking for "legal standing" in hearings on the proposed facility. "We believe the people of New Mexico deserve a seat at the table during these NRC proceedings," said NMED secretary Ron Curry, "This level of involvement will help clarify issues important to the state and its citizens, including the future disposition of all waste products." In its filing, NMED raised several issues it plans to pursue during the hearing process, including LES's plans for waste storage and disposal, waste classification, financial assurance, and health and safety requirements.
