A leading House appropriator last week added his voice to a growing chorus of nuclear energy industry officials questioning the Department of Energy's intentions for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant program, after the President's Fiscal Year 2010 budget request made no mention of the advanced demonstration reactor envisioned in the program. The budget request instead focused on the broader research and development mission of the Generation IV nuclear program, under which NGNP has traditionally been funded, and House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Peter Visclosky (D-Ind.) expressed some concerns about the program last week. "1 do think we ought to proceed with a demonstration plant. We ought to proceed and start doing some real things," Visclosky said during comments at a nuclear industry forum in Washington last week.
