Regulatory fusion

The Swedish government has approved the merger of the Swedish State Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI) and the State Radiation Protection Institute (SSI) into one single authority from 1 July 2008.rnThe regulatory and supervisory activities of the two separate organisations will continue under the new authority, the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority. The new director general will be Ann-Louise Eksborg.rnIn April 2007 the Swedish minister for the environment, Andreas Carlgren, announced the government's plans for the merger of the two regulatory authorities.rnThe merger is expected to give several benefits stemming from coordination in different areas, for example waste management, emergency preparedness and supervision of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities. It is also hoped that it will to lead to benefits in other areas as well, since SSI and SKI's areas of responsibility are closely connected.
