The first commercial PWR nuclear power plant, Westinghouse Electric's Shippingport 1, went critical in 1957. The electric power of this nuclear reactor was 90MWe and its steam generators were vertical ones, constructed by Babcock &Wilcox (U-tube in shell) and Foster Wheeler (straight tubes). However, after a spell of operation, leaks of primary circuit water were detected due to cracks in the manufacturing of SS304 stainless steel tube bundles in all steam generators.
