Despite the Great Japanese earthquake, the international experimental fusion project, ITER, is on track for first plasma in 2019. Procurement agreements representing over 70% of the total project value have been signed, the ITER Council said in November. The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) has elected six new members: Finland, Belarus, Ukraine, the Republic of Korea, Spain and Pakistan. UNSCEAR publishes scientific studies on ionizing radiation. A new high-pressure boiler has started operation at Areva's Karlstein site in Germany. The boiler will provide steam for testing the behaviour of the passive safety systems of the Kerena BWR.
