Swiss decommissioning costs rise to $22.5 billion

The bill for decommissioning and radioactive waste disposal at Switzerland's five nuclear power plants is estimated at CHF 20.65 billion ($22.46 billion). This reflects a 10% increase since the last estimate in 2006, according to figures from the Swiss Federal Energy Office (SFOE). Swiss decommissioning cost estimates are updated every five years to reflect the state of current knowledge and technological developments. The recent estimate has been prepared by swissnuclear, a technical section of the Swiss electricity suppliers' organization, swisselectric. It splits the cost into three phases: post-operation, plant decommissioning and radwaste management. Costs for a five-year post-operational phase immediately after a plant is closed are estimated at CHF 1.71 billion ($1.86 billion), up 2% on the 2006 estimate.
