摘要

As with John Earp in the last issue, I thought you had heard the last from me as INucE President a couple of issues ago. However, I'm delighted to have this (definitely) final opportunity to have my say and to wish my successor Paul Howarth and the Nuclear Institute every success for the future. I will be working hard to support Paul and his team albeit from a more 'back seat' role.rnWhen I succeeded Phil Beeley as Institution President at the beginning of 2006, the future for the nuclear sector was looking quite promising, although one had to be cautious given previous 'false dawns'. On the distinctly positive side, UK plc was starting to really get to grips with the legacy waste issue led by Government with the setting up of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the establishment of CoRWM (Committee on Radioactive Waste Management) to develop a long-term solution for high level and intermediate level wastes. Less positively, the Government (through its 2003 Energy Review) committed only to keep the nuclear option open (KNOO) while seeking to deliver its Energy Policy goals through encouraging renewable forms of electricity generation allied to energy efficiency.
