New world-class nuclear R&D facilities open for business

Almost 60 years on from when the world's first commercial nuclear power station started generating electricity there, the West Coast of Cumbria, where the Sellafield site alone has more than 200 nuclear facilities, remains at the centre of energy innovation. In today's world, where meeting the challenges of climate change and energy security is a significant focus, two key nuclear research facilities are providing the capability to respond to current and future needs. With the UK on the cusp of a nuclear renaissance, research and development (R&D) in the nuclear sector can be a significant driver of the country's future economic growth.
