Switzerland faces challenges as it plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions whilst also phasing out its use of nuclear power, according to a review of the country's energy policies by the International Energy Agency (IEA). The country aims to reduce its carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions by 20% by 2020. In September 2011 however, the Swiss Senate approved proposals not to replace the country's nuclear plants and to opt for a nuclear-free future in the wake of the accident at Fukushima-Daiichi in Japan.
