DBD is a viable and attractive alternative to disposal in a mined repository for certain categories of high-level waste, including spent fuel. The concept is safer and more cost effective (it is about a factor of five less expensive per tonne of spent fuel than for disposal in SKB's KBS-3 GDF). Once regulatory approval has been granted, and a site decided upon, it could also be implemented much faster (it would take a little over four years to drill, case, fill and seal a 5km borehole, compared with decades for a GDF).
