Life without reprocessing -the end of an era

Sellafield Ltd is recognised internationally as having a long-standing history and reputation for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The history of the Sellafield site spans more than 70 years, and commercial scale reprocessing has dominated for more than 50 of those years. But within the next four years, reprocessing operations will come to a close. This article describes the reprocessing past, its achievements and what lies ahead without reprocessing. This paper is a collection of information previously published within or external to Sellafield Ltd but brought together here editorially under the perspective of the author in his capacity as the Sellafield strategic authority to the Thorp reprocessing programmes.
