The branch hosted a fascinating online lunchtime webinar on the 'Visualisation of Dynamic Dose Rates and Cumulative Dose Uptake' from Sam Hilton of Cerberus Nuclear. Visual and dynamic it certainly was, with Sam introducing the capabilities of Cerberus Nuclear's Radiation Protection Training Aid (RAPTA). Through a series of case studies, radiation is visualised as a multicoloured plume, which gives real character to the radiation basics we all learned somewhere along the way, whether in a classroom or the workplace. The case studies showed the typical calculation of occupational doses, with the insight allowing for better optimisation of personal dosimeters. But, also a more complex case of decommissioning whereby the simulations were used to identify and assess, perhaps otherwise overlooked, direct lines of sight in the complex geometries all too familiar to decommissioning sites. Additional shielding can be employed as a result as an example, reducing the dose. The intuition the visualisation brought comes at a cost, and Cerberus Nuclear has had to develop in-house software and hardware to perform the high number of suitably accurate calculations necessary. However, the presentation highlighted the advantages of accurately modelling dynamic radiation systems and how it could support and enhance decision-making, especially if you're not quite as adept with radiation physics as this organisation is.
