This is Barakah-1, the first commercial nuclear plant in the Arab world, and it has recently begun commercial operation. This is a landmark moment for nuclear, and could stand as a guide for future development of the industry. The United Arab Emirates used the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) milestones approach for the construction of new nuclear power plants to establish a comprehensive and systematic guide that can be followed by other newcomer countries planning commercial reactors. The facility was developed by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec), established just 12 years ago, and the plant is run by operating and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company. It provides constant, reliable and sustainable electricity around the clock and is the first of four reactors, which will provide around 25% of the country's electricity once fully online. The crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, described the opening of the facility as a significant milestone in the UAE's long-term roadmap for sustainable, knowledge-based economic prosperity.
