Creation and Study of Field Emitterns with an Emission-Active Coating

摘要

An experimetnal study of single-tip fiel demitters with an emission-acting is presented. The cating is made of BaO, Ce, or the C_60 fullerene. With tip-surface coverage and cathode temeprautre varying within wide ranges, the strucutral transformations in the coating are ascertained and he perforamnce of the emitterns is measured. It is found that a solidary microsocpic hill can be created on the coating by thermal processing in an electric field. Emission-current density may be as hgih as 10~10 A/cm~2 at the hill. It is demsontrated that fullernece-coated emittters in the form of mutliple microscopic clustes distributed over the surface with tip diameter of about 1 μm can be fabricated to provde more than 100藺 under steady-sate conditions.
