IN 1921, Notes on Life and Letters, the first ofnonly two volumes of Joseph Conrad’s collectednprose was published in London in thenDent Collected Edition of the author’s worksn(the second was Last Essays, published posthumouslynin 1926). In 2004 and 2005 respectively,nthe first authoritative edition of Notesnon Life and Letters appeared, and was shortlynfollowed by Volume 7 of the Collected Letters,nwhich spans the three-year period from 1920 ton1922. Together, these two volumes demarcatenan important period in Conrad’s life, duringnwhich we witness the author seeking to shapenthe way in which he would be viewed bynposterity, having already secured a certainndegree of renown and commercial successnduring his literary lifetime in England.
